Wood Selection

Special care should be taken when selecting wood for carving. Adherence to the following guidelines will ensure your carving is the very best it can be.

Wood grain should be straight and evenly spaced.
Avoid wide bands of grain, which contrast sharply in color from the surrounding area.
Catherdraling is best suited to shells or other expanses of lightly molded areas, cathedraling should be centered as much as possible.
Avoid cathedraling which incorporates changes in color or sheen.
Avoid sharp changes in grain direction. Avoid pine knots.
